Skin Allergies
What is Skin Allergies ?
Skin allergies, also known as allergic skin reactions, are a type of inflammation of the skin that occurs when the body's immune system reacts to a substance that it perceives as harmful. The substance that triggers the allergic reaction is called an allergen. Common allergens that can cause skin allergies include poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, certain types of food, medications, and certain types of makeup or skin care products.
Symptoms of a skin allergy can include redness, itching, swelling, and a rash or hives on the skin. In severe cases, the reaction can also cause difficulty breathing and chest tightness. Skin allergies can be treated with over-the-counter or prescription medications, such as antihistamines or corticosteroids. It is important to identify and avoid the substance that is causing the allergy in order to prevent future reactions.
